Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim arrived in Shanghai on Tuesday, embarking on a three-day working visit to China with the goal of bolstering bilateral relations and expanding cooperation in emerging technologies. This visit underscores the ongoing economic partnership between Malaysia and China, with the two countries having maintained significant trade relations for over 17 years.
Anwar, who also serves as Malaysia’s finance minister, plans to engage with key Chinese leaders and participate in major events in both Shanghai and Hangzhou. His agenda includes a meeting with Chinese Premier Li Qiang in Hangzhou on Thursday, aimed at discussing further collaboration between the two nations.
In Shanghai, the Prime Minister will deliver a keynote address at the WorldSkills Conference, where he will also attend the WorldSkills Shanghai 2026 event. Following this, Anwar will head to Hangzhou to participate in the Fifth Global Digital Trade Expo, where Malaysia has been recognized as one of the Guest Countries of Honour. At these events, he is expected to emphasize the importance of artificial intelligence, digital trade, and international cooperation.
During his visit, Anwar will also engage with Chinese business and technology leaders to promote foreign investment in Malaysia. This initiative comes as Malaysia continues to strengthen its economic ties with China, with bilateral trade between the two countries reaching $113.82 billion from January to August this year.
The visit highlights Malaysia’s strategic focus on advancing its technological capabilities and enhancing trade relations with key global partners, reinforcing the longstanding and prosperous economic relationship with China.
