In a bid to ease escalating tensions in the Middle East, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has called for restraint and renewed diplomatic engagement between Iran and the United States. During a meeting in Beijing with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, Wang emphasized that ongoing conflicts do not benefit either nation or the international community.
Wang urged both countries to adhere to their existing memorandum of understanding and to reestablish negotiations built on past agreements. He underscored the importance of the Strait of Hormuz remaining open and secure, noting its critical role in global energy supplies and international trade routes.
China’s top diplomat also expressed concern about potential spillover effects of the conflict into neighboring regions, particularly Yemen and the Red Sea. He advocated for disputes to be settled through dialogue and negotiation rather than military action.
Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi conveyed Iran’s readiness to return to diplomatic channels while safeguarding its national interests. He affirmed Tehran’s stance that the current US-Iran memorandum remains valid and expressed willingness to collaborate with regional countries to enhance security and relations.
Araghchi welcomed China’s proposals for fostering peace and security across the Middle East and voiced Tehran’s interest in deepening cooperation with Beijing. The discussions reflect China’s broader strategy to mediate in international conflicts and promote regional stability.
