At the United Nations, China, along with 27 other countries, has called for the cessation of unilateral coercive measures, such as sanctions and trade restrictions, which they argue undermine international stability and infringe on the internal affairs of sovereign nations. This collective stance was presented at the UN General Assembly’s Third Committee, with China’s permanent representative to the UN, Fu Cong, emphasizing the economic and humanitarian pressures these measures place on developing countries.
The joint statement issued by the coalition of countries, which includes Russia, Egypt, and Iran, highlighted the detrimental effects of such measures on global economic and humanitarian conditions. It pointed out that sanctions and related compliance measures exacerbate economic difficulties and disrupt food, energy, and financial security. Additionally, the statement expressed concerns over the growing use of tariffs as economic leverage, warning that this could destabilize global trade and supply chains, hindering efforts toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
Furthermore, the coalition argued that unilateral coercive measures threaten fundamental human rights, impacting access to essential services such as health and education. The countries urged those imposing these measures to adhere to the principles outlined in the UN Charter and international law, calling for the lifting of such restrictions.
The statement also appealed to UN members and international organizations to offer support to countries adversely affected by these measures. The coalition stressed the importance of multilateral cooperation and respect for sovereign rights in maintaining global stability and promoting sustainable development.
